In fact, according to a recent publication by insure.com, the vehicle with the most expensive rate for injury protections and medical for accidents was the subcompact European import Fiat 500. The Fiat 500 actually performed very well in crash test scenarios through the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), being recognized as a Top Safety Pick Award winner. However, insurance companies make their own assessments of risk when it comes to auto insurance coverage and the higher rates Fiat 500 drivers have is a direct result of real world vehicle safety. "The reality is that even though the Fiat 500 performed well in some crash testings the vehicle is still very small and susceptible to extreme damage if it were involved in a multi-auto crash", explained an insurance company representative. "Insurers simply feel more comfortable with larger, heavier motor vehicles than very compact vehicles, and that is why rates certain liability coverages will be higher for cars such as the Fiat 500."
Vehicles that were recognized as the lowest in personal injury coverage by the insurance company study were heavier automobiles such as the GMC Yukon and GMC Sierra 1500.
The reason for the better rating for larger automobiles is based on research that suggests smaller cars are put under more stress in two-vehicle accidents due to the lack of mass. The lack of absorption of smaller cars puts drivers and passengers inside those vehicles in greater risk of bodily harm.
The bottom line is that bigger is better when it comes to vehicle safety, according to the folks at the IIHS.
