Where The Hell Did I Put That Remote?
I cannot tell you how many times a week I ask my wife the same tired question of, “Honey do you know where the remote control is?” A lot of the time when I cannot find the remote I will simply blame her, asking her what the hell she did with the remote, but this usually backfires on me when the channel changer is discovered a short time later in proximity to my location on the couch. With my special lady knowing my knowledge about GPS tracking technology she asked me why I couldn’t simply put a GPS tracking chip inside the remote control so if it ever became lost we could quickly locate the channel changer. Although GPS tracker technology has improved dramatically over the past 5 years, the monitoring technology really does not support the application of remote control tracking.
One of the best features many GPS trackers are now engineered with is the motion sensor. This little piece of technology allows a GPS tracker to retain battery life when the tracking system is not moving. Without a motion sensor a tracking device probably wouldn’t last more than 48 hours before the battery goes dead. One of the problems with GPS tracking a remote control would be that the channel changer is often in motion frequently throughout the day. Even if the channel changer were resting on the couch, if someone were also sitting on the couch his or her movement could trigger the motion sensor. Sadly, we as Americans watch way too much television, causing the GPS tracker to drain battery life quickly.
Although battery life would be a big concern foe someone interested in GPS tracking their remote control, the biggest hurdle would be cost. Let’s face it; as much as a pain in the butt as it is to temporarily lose the remote, paying a monthly fee for GPS tracking service is even more of a pain. All real-time GPS trackers require a monthly service obligation, and that obligation can cost upwards of $50.00 a month. With the cost of even the most extravagant and sophisticated universal remote controls costing nearly $100, the need to recover a remote control does not justify the cost of the monitoring service.
Next time the controller goes missing take it as a sign that you should probably be doing something more productive with your time, and walk away from the television!
