Win Over Dodgers Puts Nats In Postseason
The Nationals have been one of the best stories in baseball this season, and now that season will continue into October. Although the 4-1 win over the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers only secured at minimum one of the two wild card berths, it appears nothing will stop the team from DC from clinching the National League East division very shortly. The team is stacked with pitching, filled with a solid mix of both veterans and youngsters and seems to have a knack for timely hitting. The Nationals are the top dog in a very competitive division, and will surely be one of the favorites to represent the National League in the World Series.
Beating The Dodgers
After the two teams split a double header, the rubber game was easily won through dominate pitching by the Nationals. The power bats of the Dodgers were cooled with a variety of well located pitches, while Dodgers lefty Chris Capuano struggled in about every inning he pitched. Washington scored early, scored late and after 9 quick innings the jumbo screens announced that the Nationals would be playoff bound for the first time in their new home of DC. The series win also essentially eliminated Los Angeles from postseason play.
How Far Can The Nats Go?
The Nationals have all of the tools to make a deep postseason run, but anything can happen in sports. Baseball fans saw this just last year when the St. Louis Cardinals qualified for the postseason on the final day of the regular season, and catapulted that momentum into a improbable World Series title win. Even with ace pitcher Strasburg on the bench, the pitching depth can carry the Nats toward something magical. However, fans of the Nationals should feel happy that their team is built for long term success. Although the NL East has a lot of strong teams, the Nationals starting pitching, bullpen and key offensive players will be with the team for years to come. Even if the nerves of being in the postseason for the first time result in a short postseason run, sports fans in the DC area can rest assured that their baseball team will most certainly be playing again in October in the near future.
